Senior Developer: Pan-European Role

Founded in 2007 by the European Commission, Europeana is well on the way to becoming a leader in the field of semantic web implementation. Within a challenging multi-national and multi-lingual data and user environment Europeana.eu is a fast growing web portal connecting Europe's distributed cultural heritage.

As a Senior Developer you will play a key role in this exciting and creative environment working within a highly visible and dynamic international project. We are building pan-European links to research institutes, leading museums, libraries, archives and audio-visual repositories.

Europeana's home base is located in the centre of the Hague, hosted within the Dutch Royal Library (Koninklijke Bibliotheek). We are an international, enthusiastic, friendly and motivated team of 40 representing more than 15 nationalities.

The role:

  • As part of the Europeana core development team you will design, develop and maintain the Europeana.eu digital library system, with a focus on the backend and search functionalities.
  • You will be partnering with business requirement owners to assess feasibility, specify and scope feature requests and determine technical specifications.
  • Your support of our European partner projects to enhance their software contributions to Europeana development will be critical.
  • Integrating components developed by the partner projects whilst evaluating their suitability and software quality is a key aspect of this role.

Required skills and experience:

  • Ideally you will have a university level education in computer science or a related field.
    Alternatively an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 5+ years of software development and integration experience.
  • An excellent knowledge and overview of modern software architectures and development methodologies.
  • Thorough experience in Java development in Linux, Apache, Lucene, Solr environments.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • The ability and desire to work as part of a team.
