Judaica - Jewish Contribution to Europe's Cultural Heritage
Judaica Europeana is a targeted project co-funded by the eContentPlus programme that will work with European cultural institutions to identify content documenting the Jewish cultural contribution to the cities of Europe.
The project aims to contribute 10,500 photos, 1,500 postcards and 7,150 recordings of Jewish culture, as well as a very large quantity of books, newspapers, archives and press clippings to Europeana.
Judaica's goals and expected results
- Documentation of Jewish expression in Europe: Judaica will encourage and support content holders in identifying Jewish content in their collections that reflect the activities, creativity and self-expression of Jews in European cities.
- Digitisation and aggregation of this content: A coherent thematic collection will be created and incorporated into Europeana: Standards will be coordinated across institutions in order to synchronise the metadata with the interoperability requirements of Europeana.
- Deployment of knowledge management tools: These will enable communities of practice to adapt, and apply controlled vocabularies, thesauri and ontologies for the indexing, retrieval and re-use of the aggregated content pertinent to their own areas of interest.
- Support for the use of the digitised content: Items added by Judaica will be used in scholarship and academic research; university-based teaching; online teaching and learning; museum curatorship and virtual exhibitions; events and initiatives of cultural institutions in European cities; cultural tourism; formal and informal education.
